I love the holidays! It has always been my favorite time of the year! Lots of happiness and cheer in the air! I find it even more fun now that I have a family of my own! It is so much fun buying for the boys and anticipating their joy and reactions on Christmas morning when they see what Santa brought them! It is great! Of course, not only does the holidays mean presents and lots of joy, but it means lots of time with family and friends. The ones that mean the most to you! and you surely can't forget the food! We do live in the south! We love our food!! All of the good recipes! Turkey, ham, dressing, and tons of veggies and tons of desserts!
But at the same time it is very sad to me! I remember growing up having the family traditions! We would always gather at Grandma's for Thanksgiving. Grandma loves to cook, so she was doing what she loves and does best!! All the ladies would pick in and help and they all looked like they were running around with their heads cut off getting everything ready. While all of us kids, had the carefree life. Playing, horsing around! Having a great time! Driving our parents crazy in the process. You know we always wanted to be in the middle of everything, even the kitchen. And well there just wasn't enough room for all of us in there.. and we just got in the way. The adults would always sit at the big table and chat. They always set up a kids table for all of us.. We had our own little area!! We did the same thing for Christmas! After supper on Christmas Eve, we would always gather in the living room anxiously waiting our presents. ( We always drew names, well except the kids, and everyone got the kids something ). It was easier that way, and cheaper, when there was 6 kids running around! Grandma would sit down by the Christmas tree with her Santa hat on and she would pass out the gifts...

However, these days just aren't the same. All the kids have grown up, started their own families and some have moved away! With marriage comes extended families! And man most of us have lots of that! We have a decent size family already and when you had all the extra family it is even bigger! You are always making sure that you cover all the family during the holidays. You have parents, grandparents, in laws to make sure that you see! It can be rather stressful as an adult! Planning and making sure that you don't leave anyone out! Its not as carefree as it was when we were kids. But nonetheless, I still want the traditions!! I want my boys to grow up with the memories that I have of the holidays with our family! Grant it, we still all try to get together for the holidays with Grandma, but it isn't so easy anymore. ( see planning around extended family )! Grandma is a WONDERFUL WONDERFUL woman! We all know that!! She is not selfish at all! So therefore, she always wants to make sure that all the other family is taken care of. She says she sees us all the time and that we have to make sure we spend time with everyone! Which granted I love seeing everyone, but where are the traditions??? There is no guarantee on Thanksgiving at lunch or supper everyone will be at grandmas. There is no guarantee at lunch or supper everyone will be at Grandmas on Christmas Eve anymore!
Anyway, I hope that everyone has a Wonderful Thanksgiving and a Very Merry Christmas!
