We started off the morning worrying that Pierce would be asking for milk all morning ( he loves his milk) because we didn't have to be to the hospital until 9 a.m. But he was a trooper and remembered us telling him that he couldn't have any milk after he went to bed! We got to the hospital and to our room where we would wait to be called upstairs to surgery. We waited and we waited, which seems like FOREVER! Finally around 10:30 or so we got called upstairs. Right before we got called up they gave him "funny" medicine as I call it. Its like valium for kids. It makes them act so silly, he had Ryan, the dr and me laughing so hard! Sweet Pierce! Dr. Reed (ENT) came by and talked to us and explained again what he would be doing. Which was to go into Pierce's sinus cavity and get a culture to see why he is always sick with sinuses! So they take him back, and it looked like he was going to get upset but thank goodness he didn't! That made it a little easier on Momma and Daddy! It only took about 10-15 min for Dr. Reed to do what he had to do, and when he got done the other Dr. that was going to put in the picc line started. Dr. Reed came out and explained how everything went and that Pierce did great going to sleep. He said that when he got into his sinus cavitity it wasn't as bad as he expected, seeing that Pierce has had this mess for at least a year!! He said that meant 1 of 2 things. One, there wasn't anything bad in there ( which would not tell us what is going on ) or two, it would be really bad. We wouldn't know the results till at least Monday or Tuesday. All in all he was in "surgery" per say for an hour! Daddy went back to see him when he was waking up cause we all know that is who he would want! He loves loves loves his daddy! Such a daddy's boy! So afterwards we went back down to the other floor for him to be monitored for a little while to make sure that he woke up good. He was a trooper! His nose was bleeding from where Dr. Reed had gone into his sinus cavitity. This is when we learned that we wouldn't be starting antibotics through his picc line until they got the results from the culture. And that a home health nurse would come out and change the bandage and give us stuff to maintain the line! So we were set to go home!
The home health nurse came out and showed us how to flush the line to keep it from closing or clotting, which wouldn't be good. And that is all we had to do over the weekend. Monday, we got a call from Dr. Reed's office with the results from the culture. It showed that there were 3 "bugs" or bacteria in his sinus cavitity. Poor baby, no wonder he was never getting well. So then the home health place called and said that they would be coming out to give us medicine to give through the picc line and show us how to do it! It takes about 30-40 mins for the medicine to get done. It is a little bulb that we hook up and he can do whatever in the time that it is going in! He does so great! He doesn't have to be still, which is a blessing, but I know that he would! He is a sweetie! He is doing great with the whole picc line, much to our surprise, but a good surprise! We only give him med once a day. And we'll do that for 14 -20 days. Not sure yet!
* My feelings are hurt that some didn't call and check on Pierce afterwards! But we love ya'll!
**You know, I was thinking after nursing Ryan after his wreck and nursing Pierce through this, what you think.. Nursing school???? ha ha! Never thought I would say that, but I can't lie it sounds interesting and has crossed my mind! Thank goodness for Ryan, we can't afford for me to quit work and go to nursing school full time!
